The American Buffalo, or Bison Bison, aka "bison" or "buffs" - depending on who you are speaking with at any given moment in the buffalo community, was saved from the cusp of extinction in the late 1800s by the concern of a single man, William T. Hornaday. His lobbying for a national zoo after a return from out West where he witnessed first hand the decimation of the iconic mammals led to Congress passing a bill that President Cleveland signed into law in 1889. cont.
