Is your American Buffalo meat grass-fed?Yes!!!! Our buffalo are grass-fed and finished. Their daily diet includes a mixture of native grasses, fescues, and clovers. We supplement specially blended minerals based on forage testing, during the colder months we provide premium alfalfa and timothy, and orchard hay, and...don't hold it against us, but they receive their favorite treat of molasses too. Unlike many operations, we do not separate our yearlings from the herd in order to raise 'feeders.' Our calves are naturally weaned and remain with their mothers, as nature intended, and never receive daily feedings of corn to fatten them up or promote growth in shorter time. Our animals are born and raised on our ranch. Our "meat animals" are selected at time of harvest. Until then, each buffalo in our herd is treated and cared for the same and with the potential of living out their life in our pastures. This permits an education only the buffalo can teach to calves, yearlings, and beyond.

Do you use hormones, antibiotics, or vaccines? So glad you asked! The simple answer? Do we use hormones? NO. Do we use antibiotics? If we need to treat for an illness, pink eye, or some other ailment that requires antibiotics short-term and vet prescribed? Sure thing! We won't allow an animal to suffer just so we can sell meat as "antibiotic free." Is it a normal or regular practice. NOPE. In fact, only once have we had an animal that required antibiotics, and that single dose had a withdrawal of 18-days. That animal was not a meat animal and certainly wasn't harvested within that time frame. Do we vaccinate our herd? YES. Recently there has been a lot of talk about mRNA vaccines, and a growing concern about what might be residual or how it might impact human health if used in meat animals. University of Tennessee has weighed in and provides information that will put your mind at ease. You can read it here. In the meantime - at Buffalo Ridge Farm we do maintain a vaccine protocol in order to provide what protections we can for our herd. We vaccinate against Black Leg, Pink Eye, Clostridium chauvoei, septicum, novyi, perfringens Types C & D, haemolyticum (bacillary hemoglobinuria/red water) and tetani and follow label protocols. Do we treat for parasites? YES. Whenever the need is identified through fecal exams and, in coordination with our vet, if necessary we will treat for parasites in order to maintain good health of our herd, reduce risk of soil contamination, and spread of parasitic illnesses in our community. This maintenance produces a healthier herd that continues to promote stronger immunity against parasites, which results in fewer required preventatives measures. But most importantly for you as our customer, insures you receive a healthy protein from a non-aminic animal. We keep detailed record of each of our animals, and welcome you to inquire about any of our products health history.
